The Centre for Ageing Better have published their flagship report: The State of Ageing 2023-24, which highlights the growth in size and diversity of older age groups.
The number of people aged 80 and over is set to double from 3 million to 6 million in the next 40 years. This report finds that those later years of life are being characterised by financial difficulty, with many living in poverty and having difficulty accessing the community due to mobility and public transport issues.
The Centre for Ageing Better calls for the Government to:
- Establish a Commissioner for Older People and Ageing - Something we also called for when we signed an open letter in collaboration with 70 organisations across the sector.
- Make all new homes accessible for Disabled and old people.
- Create local communities where people can age well.
