The Winter COVID-19 Infection Study (WCIS) will run from November 2023 to March 2024, with the primary aim of gathering crucial data on Covid-19 this winter.
Working together, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will analyse up to 32,000 lateral flow tests each week to determine the levels of Covid-19 across communities.
Existing systems provide information on the hospital and intensive care unit admissions rates. However this latest study will highlight changes in the infection hospitalisation rate (IHR), which requires accurate measurement of infection levels in the community.
