New research for Home Instead has found that many family carers are struggling to manage their busy lives and caring responsibilities, with 88% neglecting their own health and wellbeing, 65% struggling with their mental health, and 31% feeling they are at breaking point.

The survey of 2000 family caregivers across the UK revealed that over half (59%) know little about what is available from services such as homecare and 40% of respondents believed that turning to social care is a sign of weakness for themselves.

The research said a poor understanding of the social care market – what help and choice is available from private providers and the state – is making life much harder than it needs to be for many, and education is needed to help and support family carers and to alleviate any stigma associated.
